Abstract

1,164,407. Methanol synthesis gas. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. 4 July, 1968, No. 32051/68. Heading C5E. [Also in Division C1] Methanol synthesis gas is made from a crude gas produced by the gasification of a solid or liquid fuel with O 2 and steam by a process which comprises the following steps in sequence: cooling to remove condensates (at 2, 4), scrubbing with xylene, toluene or methanol, at 6, to remove S components and part of the CH 4 , N 2 and A components, CO-conversion, at 28, of part 26 of the gas stream, blending of the two streams, at 30, and scrubbing with the same absorbent to remove CO 2 and more CH 4 , N 2 and A, at 35, the product gas leaving at 34. The flow rate of the gas stream to the converter 28 is controlled to give the correct volume ratio of H 2 to CO in the final gas, and both scrubbers 6, 35 are operated at sub-zero temperatures. The absorbent is regenerated at 13 and recycled by a pump 20 for delivery to the column 35 and regeneration by flashing at 40, and degassing at 42, part being recycled to 6, and the rest being further flashed at 48, degassed at 50, and stripped at 56 by gas (air or N 2 ) entering at 57. The absorbent is recycled to 35 via 73, 74, 36. CO 2 leaves at 52, and exhaust gas at 70.
