Abstract

116,431. Farnsworth, W. W. Sept. 25, 1917. Vacuum cleaning-apparatus.-In a self-contained renovator or vacuum cleaner, the nozzle or head 10 is divided by a partition 11 into a cupshaped chamber 12 and an air-inlet chamber 13 communicating near the bottom through openings 15, and air is drawn from the chamber 12 by a fan 18 driven by a motor 19, and passes through a pipe 20 to a dust-separator, whence the purified air is forced through a pipe 27 to the chamber 13, and blasts are directed through the preferably inclined openings 15 on to the surface to be cleaned to raise the dust and partly relieve the weight of the cleaner. In the form shown in Fig. 1, an operating-handle 29 is provided and the cleaner is supported by the front edge of the nozzle and a roller 28 spaced therefrom. The dust-separator 21 comprises a tank containing liquid 22 and reticulated members 23 rotated on a shaft 24 bv the current of air so that the dust is deposited in the liquid, the tank being provided with a cleaning- out plug 25 and a preferably removable closure 31. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the air is forced by the fan 33 through a tube 36 into a bag 37 detachably secured to the tube and by a flexible member 39 to the handle 40. A partition 41 in the bag forms a filter screen for the air, the purified air being forced through a tube 44 to the nozzle 32.
