Abstract
1,164,276. Refrigerating. HYMATIC ENG. CO. Ltd. 27 Oct., 1966 [28 Oct., 1965], No. 45686/65. Heading F4H. In a Joule Thompson cooling apparatus in which a gas is liquefied to cool a load, the compressed gas supply to the Joule Thompson nozzle is modulated by valve control. As illustrated in Fig. 1, a control unit 95 is included in the line between a bottle of compressed gas and the Joule Thompson apparatus. A valve 107 is influenced by springs 100 and 104, downstream gas pressure on a face 97, and a bellows 99 which is connected with a bulb 110 in the Joule Thompson cooler and towards which the nozzle is directed. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 a metal rod 115 is so arranged with respect to the nozzle 83 and has such a coefficient of expansion relative to the remainder of the cooler that rising liquid level in the latter causes the flow cross-section of the nozzle to be reduced. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), a bellows (120) in the cooler contracts with rising liquid level to operate a baffle (123) to reduce the flow crosssection of the nozzle. The Joule Thompson cooler together with its flow control may be incorporated in a cold gas engine as a second cooling stage, Fig. 4 (not shown).
