Abstract

1,164,243. Liquid cargoes transferring; counterbalancing apparatus. FMC CORP. 4 Jan., 1968 [17 Jan., 1967], No. 619/68. Headings B8B and B8E. A marine loading arm comprises a riser assembly 12 mounted on the deck and inner and outer mutually pivoted pipe sections 30, 38 actuated by pairs of singleacting hydraulic cylinders 68, 60 respectively to position a manifold coupling assembly 40 correctly for it to be bolted to a ship's manifold. The pipe sections are counterbalanced by a weight 80 adjustable along a rigid beam 78 connected to the pipe section 30 by means of a pair of hydraulic cylinders 81. Since the counterbalancing movement required for any position of the pipe sections varies according to the amount of liquid in the pipes means are provided to automatically adjust the position of the weight 80 to effect approximate balance before movement of the sections occurs. A common hydraulic control circuit for the cylinders 68 and 81 is provided including resistance valves arranged to sense imbalance and to divert actuating pressure to operate a cylinder 81 to appropriately re-position the weight 80 until approximate balance occurs when the actuating pressure is all applied to the cylinders 68 to re-position the pipe sections.
