Abstract

1,220,578. Anti jack-knifing apparatus. S. H. PEARSON. 9 April, 1968 [17 March, 1967], No. 12557/67. Heading B7T. [Also in Division F2] An hydraulic stabilizer for connection between the towing and towed members of an articulated vehicle so as to prevent jack-knifing, consists of a rotary vane or piston-and-cylinder unit in which flow of fluid from one chamber to another is controlled by two parallel sets of valves. The first valve set keeps a connection between the chambers normally open but closes it when the vehicle brakes are applied and the second set allows flow between the chambers at all times, but only in a direction from the larger volume chamber to the smaller-both chambers being of equal volume in the equilibrium position. The chambers may be the respective cylinders of two piston-cylinder units whose pistons are interconnected, the cylinder bodies mounted on one member of the articulated vehicle and the pistons connected to the other. As shown however the two chambers A and B are defined by a fixed partition 2 and a rotary vane 3 in a housing 1, the housing being for connection to one of the vehicle members and the shaft 4 of the rotary vane to the other. The above mentioned valve sets consist respectively of valve 5 and valves 6 to 9. They may be mounted externally of the housing 1 as in Fig. 1 or internally. Fig. 2 (not shown) depicts a suitable structure of valve 5 for internal fitting. The valves operate as follows: valve 5 is normally open but control means (not shown) close it when the vehicle brakes are applied; valve 6 is linked to vane 3 to open whenever the vane moves clockwise from the mean poistion shown and valve 8 is similarly linked to open on anticlockwise movement; valves 7 and 9 are oneway valves allowing flow only in the directions shown. Their combined effect is that, with the brakes off, the vane 3 can rotate freely in both directions, but as soon as the brakes are applied it cannot swing further away from its mean position but can move freely toward the mean position, and so will tend to be restored to that position.
