Abstract

116,375. Walsh, F. F. P. June 21, 1917. Accelerometers and retardometers.- Apparatus for indicating and determining in magnitude and direction, without reference to any fixed external points, such as those of the horizon, a change in the normal velocity, path, or position of a body in motion, or at rest, comprises two nozzles a, Fig. 6, adapted to deliver horizontal streams of liquid from the reservoir f. The streams fall through a grating h and are conducted to a tank i from which the liquid is forced back to the reservoir by a centrifugal pump j. When the body is at rest or moving with a constant velocity, the streams are seen in plan as shown in Fig. 1, but a change in velocity causes them to follow the paths shown in plan in Fig. 4. Rotational movements about horizontal and vertical axes produce the effects shown in Figs. 3 and 5, and thus afford an indication of inclination. By the provision of suitable calibration marks, the change in velocity &c. can be measured, and the device may be employed to detect earth tremors.
