Abstract

1,163,355. Tetrazoles. BORG-WARNER CORP. 28 April, 1967 [17 May, 1966], No. 19649/67. Heading C2C. 5-Substituted tetrazoles of the formula in which the broken line represents the second double bond either in the 2, 3 or 3, 4 position, R represents an alkyl or cycloalkyl group, containing up to 6 carbon atoms, or a phenyl group or substituted phenyl group of formula in which R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> represent hydrogen or an alkyl, nitro or nitroso group, are prepared by heating a mixture of a nitrile compound RCN with a Friedel-Crafts catalyst and a metal azide in the absence of a solvent to 60-130‹ C., adding a dilute aqueous inorganic acid to hydrolyse the reaction product, steam distilling the aqueous hydrolysate to remove any unreacted nitrile, and recovering crystals of the 5-substituted tetrazole from the aqueous hydrolysate. Suitable nitriles are, for example, benzonitrile ; o-, m- or p-toluonitrile and butyronitrile. Azides which may be used are those of sodium, potassium, lithium, calcium and magnesium.
