Abstract
1,163,283. Magnetic heads. NIPPON COLUMBIA K.K. 21 Sept., 1966 [22 Sept., 1965], No. 42150/66. Heading G5R. A multiple magnetic head assembly comprising head elements 3-5 laminated together with spaces 6, 7 and carrying a common signal winding 8, has a different reluctance in each element whereby a single selected element may be rendered operational by saturating all but the desired one. The selection may be effected by magnets and/or windings. As shown, head elements 3, 4, 5 have apertures 11-13 formed in each leg, the central aperture 12, and preferably also the apertures 11, 13, increasing in width through the head unit. Windings 18, 19 are arranged round the apertures and the former energized to produce a flux encircling the central aperture 12 sufficient to saturate the vertical flux paths 14, 15 in each element. Winding 19, being in opposition to winding 18, is selectively energized to a degree sufficient to neutralize the effect of winding 18 in the desired element and to saturate those of less reluctance in the opposite direction, but unsufficient to overcome the saturation of the remainder. The widths of the lateral flux paths 16, 17 may be progressively increased to enhance the effect. In a modification, the saturating winding 18 is replaced by permanent magnets (Fig. 5, not shown) arranged in each element and of progressive pole strength.
