Abstract
1,163,091. Hexenes; isoprene. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 29 Dec., 1966 [11 Feb., 1966], No. 6118/66. Addition to 962,255. Heading C5E. Hexenes are produced by contacting a mixture of ethylene and one or more butenes at a temperature between 40‹ and 100‹ C. with a catalyst consisting of or containing elemental lithium and/or sodium dispersed on an anhydrous potassium compound, e.g. KOH, K 2 CO 3 , K 2 SO 4 or a halide or silicate of potassium. The main products are 3-methyl-pentene- 1 when butene-1 or -2 is used, and 2-methylpentene-1 when isobutene is used. The products may be converted to isoprene by first isomerizing to give isoprene precursors, i.e. methyl pentenes capable of being demethanated to isoprene by pyrolysis.
