Abstract
1,163,029. Organosilicon block copolymers. DOW CORNING CORP. 10 May, 1967 [19 May, 1966], No. 21737/67. Heading C3T. Block copolymers of tetraphenylsilphenylenesiloxane are made by (1) homo-polymerizing in solution in an inert solvent and in contact with an amino catalyst soluble in the system, the catalyst being an amino compound having a dissociation constant of at least 1 x 10<SP>-6</SP>, and (2) mixing the resulting homopolymer solution with (A) a siloxane polymer of the formula in which each R is a monovalent aliphatic hydrocarbon (h.c.) or halo-aliphatic h.c. radical, each R<SP>1</SP> is a monovalent h.c. or halo-h.c. radical, and x has an average value of at least 10, and (B) an ammonium or amine salt of a carboxylic or phosphoric acid, said salt being soluble in the solution, and heating to condense the diols, in solution, to form a block copolymer in which the ratio of units to -RR<SP>1</SP>SiO- units is from 3: 97 to 97: 3. Solvents specified are benzene, toluene, xylene, diphenylether and anisole. Catalysts specified in step (1) are ammonia, hydrazine, and various aliphatic amines. Catalysts used in step (2) are well known and can be any of those in Specifications 895,091 and 925,433. Uses.-In moulding compositions, coating compositions, as electrical insulators, and for heat-sealing applications.
