Abstract

1,162,834. Deformation imaging. RANK XEROX Ltd. Nov.7, 1966 [Nov. 8, 1965], No.49760/66. Heading G2H. The controlled development of deformation images comprises heating the surface of a thermoplastic film so that it deforms under the action of an imagewise distributed electrostatic charge thereon, detecting the amount of deformation, and controlling the heating in response to the amount of surface deformation detected. The degree of surface deformation may be determined optically by measuring the amount of visible light or irradiation from a light source which is reflected from or transmitted by the film during development; this may be measured by a photoelectric cell connected to a control means which at a predetermined light value closes a shutter in front of a heat source used for the deformation, thus terminating the deformation. The light and heat sources may be in a single unit. The thermoplastic film may be carried on an opaque or transparent photo-conductive layer (e.g. selenium) carried on an opaque or transparent conductive base (e.g. tin oxide-coated glass), dependent on whether light measurement is by reflection or transmission respectively. The material may be charged and exposed several times before development.
