An arch 11 is arranged coaxially with and above a burner 8 heating a soaking pit. The arch deflects heat against the hearth, and prevents undue cooling of the walls when the lid 7 of the soaking pit is opened. Each cell of a soaking pit may have a burner and arch in each of two opposite walls.
