Abstract
1,162,384. Treating polyolefin materials. D. D. GAGLIARDI. 31 Aug., 1966, No. 38905/66. Heading D1P. The heat and light stability of a preformed article made from a solid polyolefin is im-. proved by imbuing its surface with a zinc, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, nickel, tin or zirconium salt of an organic substituted phosphoric compound having the formula in which R is a nalkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkyloxy, cycloalkyloxy or aryloxy radical, R' is a monovalent radical which is a hydroxy, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkyloxy, cycloalkyloxy or aryloxy radical and R" is a monovalent radical which is hydrogen or or R is a polyvalent radical joining two or more of the phosphate or phosphonate radicals, the radicals R, R' and R" when organic radicals preferably containing 2-20 carbon atoms and optionally being substituted with one or more fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine atoms. The metal salt may be applied to the surface of the article which is then heated to a temperature of at least 100‹C and at least 10‹C below the melting point of the. polyolefin for sufficient time to imbue the surface of the article with the applied compound. Instead of the metal salt itself, the free organic substituted phosphoric compound and a salt of the metal with a weak acid, i.e. an acid having a dissociation constant less than that of the organic substituted phosphoric compound used, e.g. acetic, citric or tartaric acid, may be applied to the surface of the article which is then heated. Alternatively the free organic substituted phosphoric compound may be applied to the surface of the article which is then heated and the article is then treated with a solution of the weak acid salt of the metal. The treating agents may be applied from aqueous or organic solvent solutions or dispersions and after drying the treated article may be heated by direct heating, by flash diffusion of the heating agent under pressure, or in the presence of superheated steam or steam distillation onto the surface. The treated articles may subsequently. be scoured, rinsed and dried and may also be treated with amino compounds, dyes, pigments, oil-repellents or antistatic agents. The articles treated may be in the form of fibres, yarns or fabrics. Fabrics comprising polyolefin fibres, e.g. fibres made from homo- or copolymers of ethylene, propylene or 4-methylpentene-1 in admixture with polyester, nylon, silk or cotton fibres may be treated.
