A combined drying and cooling apparatus for white sugar comprises a rotary drum formed from drying and cooling drums 1, 4 separated by a wall 4a having a central opening with a conical or pyramidal wall 6 extending thereinto. Lifter blades 5 project the sugar dried by countercurrent hot air flow which is introduced into the drum 1 from inlets in a fixed housing 12 about the junction point of the drums and the cooling drum has cooling air outlets in the housing. The inlets and outlets are enclosed by helical plates 11, air flow is maintained by a single fan 17, and the drying air is heated by an air heater 16.
