Abstract

1,162,108. Thermionic cathode constructions. SIEMENS A.G. 22 Dec., 1966 [23 Dec., 1965], No. 57337/66. Heading H1D. A cathode arrangement, e.g. for a travelling - wave tube, includes a main plate of porous emissive material which acts, when in operation, as the target electrode of a dispenser cathode 5, whereby the main plate is both heated by electron bombardment from, and is also activated by emission promoting substance from, the auxiliary cathode. As shown, the space between the two cathodes is completely enclosed by tantalum foil cylinders 2 and 4 joined by an insulating ring 3, but alternatively this space may be unenclosed, the plate 1 being supported from the dispenser cathode by insulating pillars. The dispenser cathode 5 is of metal capillary type, the cathode 1 being of tungsten with an overlying layer of osmium or iridium.
