Abstract

1,162,033. Measuring temperature. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. June 20, 1968 [July 12, 1967] No. 32121/67. Heading G1D. Apparatus for measuring the degree of undercooling or super-heating of a liquid, particularly a liquefied gas, in a container 20 comprises a differential pressure gauge 11 coupled on the one hand to a vapour pressure thermometer consisting of a sealed bulb 14 preferably containing the same gas as that of the container 20 and connected to the gauge 11 by a line 12 and on the other hand to a conduit 13 leading to the interior of the container 20, and responsive to the pressure therein. The differential pressure measured by the gauge, i. e. the difference in pressure between the container 20 and that of the bulb 14, which is directly responsive to the temperature in the container will give a direct measure of the temperature of the liquid in relation to its boiling point. The liquefied gas may be nitrogen, oxygen or argon and a vaporizing coil 21 is included in the conduit 13 to ensure that the gas therein is in the gaseous state. This coil may be dispensed with if a conduit such as 15 is employed, but in this case allowance must be made for the difference in height between the conduit and the bulb 14 in the container 20.
