1,161,848. Pyromellitic dianhydride. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 17 Aug., 1967, No. 37896/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] Pyromellitic dianhydride may be prepared by the vapour phase oxidation, e.g. in the presence of vanadium catalysts, or liquid phase oxidation, e.g. in the presence of HNO 3 , of a 1,2,4,5- tetraalkylbenzene, which is prepared by reacting a xylene feed with propylene, butene-1, butene-2 or mixtures thereof in the presence of an acidic alkylation catalyst dissolved in the xylene.
