Abstract

1,161,206. Automatic frequency control systems. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. 26 Sept., 1966 [29 Sept., 1965], No. 41307/65. Heading H3A. The output F o of a controlled oscillator 1 is fed through a phase splitter 3 to a double bank binary divider 4 which provides two outputs at half the frequency and in phase quadrature to balanced modulators 5 and 6 which are also supplied with a modulating frequency Fm directly and through phase shifter 8; the outputs of the two modulators are combined to give either the sum or the difference frequency according to the phase shift arrangements, and fed through a filter to a variable frequency divider 10 and a phase comparator 11 supplied from a reference oscillator 12 and controlling the oscillator 1. It is shown that F 0 = 2(NFc ΠFm), where N is the ratio of the divider 10 and Fc is the comparison frequency at the comparator 11. The system may be used in a frequency synthesizer and may be applied to a communications receiver which can be tuned to any arbitrary frequency to receive a single sideband transmission.
