Abstract

1,161,002. Nonlinear circuits. ROYAL INDUSTRIES Inc. 30 Nov., 1966 [21 Feb., 1966], No. 53532/66. Heading G4G. [Also in Division H4] A hearing aid comprises microphone 10, preamplifier 11 and volume control 13 capacitance coupled to output transducer 14 through a curvilinear compression amplifier 12 comprising transistor 15 having a logarithmic feedback circuit, wherein the collector and base are inter-connected by resistor 18 in parallel with a resistor 21 in series with capacitor 24 and parallel oppositely connected diodes 22, 23; resistor 21 being proportioned for linear amplification up to a predetermined level, above which the diodes progressively conduct and impose increasing feedback on the amplifier, so that the overall response is one of curvilinear compression (Fig. 3, not shown). In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), the degree of compression is made adjustable by energizing the feedback circuit through an adjustable potentiometer.
