Abstract
1,160,741. Concentrating and separating suspensions. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 12 Aug., 1966 [12 May, 1965], No. 20038/65. Heading C1C. Solid or immiscible liquid particles suspended in liquid are concentrated in the leading fractions of successive columns of the liquid which flow non-turbulently through a narrow tube, and the leading and trailing fractions of each column are directed into separate receivers at the tube outlet. In Fig. 2 compressed air is supplied to the space above suspension in reservoir 25, and successive columns entering the tube 31 are separated by columns of air delivered to the outlet 28 by vertically reciprocating, inverted bucket 29. In Fig. 1 (not shown) a two way valve (9) upstream of the tube (10) directs alternate columns of suspension and air thereto. The valve (9) and two way deflector (11) at the tube outlet may be driven by a common motor. The tube may be of polypropylene, nylon or glass, may be circular in section and coiled, and should be 10 to 200 times the diameter of average particles being separated. A typical tube is 0À077 cms. diameter and 18.29 meters long.
