Abstract

Carboxylic acid derivatives, e.g. esters, nitriles, amides and substituted amides are freed from acids in a continuous process by contacting with an aqueous alkaline liquid of different specific gravity by passing one liquid in the form of droplets or streams through the other in a neutralization zone filled with inert packing in which the free acid is completely neutralized and subsequently coalescing the drops to a pool in contact with, but separated from, the other liquid. Either liquid may be a continuous or discontinuous stream and move countercurrently. Examples describe the treatment of butyl stearate, methyl esters of coconut oil fatty acids, a dipropyl ester of succinic acid, stearyl stearate epoxidized soybean oil, and stearamide. Apparatus comprising a chamber with packing material with inlet pipes for the product to be deacidified is described.
