Abstract

A process for the continuous production of phosphopentasulphide or phosphosesquisulphide or, mixtures of the two phosphosulphides or, mixtures of phosphopentasulphide with sulphur or, mixtures of phosphosesquisulphide with phosphorus, comprises adding the molten elements in the required proportions in separate streams and at a temperature below that of the boiling point of the desired reaction product, into a vertical reaction tube which is maintained at a temperature above the melting point and below the boiling point of the desired reaction product, and removing the condensed liquid reaction product from the base of the reaction tube. The reaction tube may be wholly or partly immersed in a jacket adapted to hold a boiling liquid which liquid serves to hold the reaction tube at a selected temperature. The diameter of the tube may be between 5 and 20 cm. and the diameter height ratio may be between 1 : 10 and 1 : 30.
