Abstract

1,160,668. Counterbalancing loads. BERKEY TECHNICAL (U.K.) Ltd. 2 July, 1968, No. 31497/68. Heading B8B. [Also in Division F4] A telescopic support for a load e.g. studio lamps, secured to a housing 8 at the bottom of telescopic tubes 2 comprises a load supporting cable 5 secured at the top of the tubes 2 and wound on a spring loaded reel 10 in the housing 8, the reel being connected via a freewheel device 15 to an adjustable brake which supports the load and resists paying out but not winding in of the cable 5. The brake comprises a plate 17 rotatable with the freewheel 15 and engageable between linings 19 on the housing 8 and a pressure plate 18 which is acted upon by a spring stack 20 adjustable by a screw 22, 24. The latter includes a spring catch 25 for rotational locking purposes. The load is manually moved up and down via a handle 27 on the housing 8, the drum 10 freewheeling during lifting and being retarded by the brake during lowering of the load. During lifting, the slack formed in the cable 5 is taken up on the reel 10 associated with a coil spring 12 which is reverse coiled during load lowering. The tubes 2 prevent rotation of the housing about the telescopic axis and are provided with lamp cable clips 30.
