Abstract
1,160,639. Thermally insulated pipes; pipe couplings. JOHNS-MANVILLE CORP. 19 Dec., 1967 [27 Dec., 1966], No. 57730/67. Headings F2G and F2P. A thermally insulated pipe section comprising coaxial inner and outer tubes, adapted to be connected to similar sections to form a pipe system for installation underground, has a coupling sleeve mounted on one end of the inner tube and sealed with respect thereto, the sleeve extending at least partially within the outer tube and being embedded in thermal insulation material filling the space between the outer and inner tubes, the other end of the inner tube protruding beyond the end of the outer tube and being receivable slidably and sealingly within the coupling sleeve of an adjacent section, such that substantially continuous thermal insulation is provided along the length of the inner tube system while a gap is left between adjacent inner tubes to allow for thermal expansion. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, the inner tubes 4 are of copper coated with silicone grease to allow axial expansion within the insulation material 48 which is a foamed polyurethane, the coupling sleeve 26 is a bronze casting, provided with ribs 28, 29 and associated grooves 30 containing sealing rings 32, and the outer tubes 6 are of asbestos cement. The coupling sleeve is assembled on to one end of one inner tube, with an integral flange 34 in abutment with the end of the inner tube, and resilient members 10, 38, which are mounted respectively on the coupling sleeve and the mating end of the adjacent inner tube, are fitted into one outer tube 6, prior to injection of the polyurethane foam, the latter being caused to fill the space between inner and outer tubes and also to fill holes 24 in the member 10. Adjacent sections are then fitted together, the free end of the adjacent inner tube entering the coupling sleeve 26 and being sealed by the ring 32, while the member 10, which is provided with flexible lips 18, enters the adjacent outer tube to couple the outer tubes together. Abutment of the outer tube end 36 with a flange 12 of member 10 limits insertion of the tube 4 to allow room for thermal expansion. In a modification, Fig. 4, neither of the resilient members 60, 80, which replace the members 10, 38 acts as a coupling member, a separate P.V.C. plastics sleeve 86 being used to connect adjacent outer tubes 56 which are also of P.V.C. plastics material, a rubber sealing gasket 90 fitted in a recess 88 of sleeve 86 engaging the outer tube to seal the latter.
