Abstract
1,160,561. Continuous casting machines; welding by fusion. UNITED STATES STEEL CORP. 8 Sept., 1966 [21 Sept., 1965], No. 40231/66. Headings B3F and B3R. A continuous casting mould 10 comprises a liner 11 supported by a bolted on back-up structure 13 having water inlet and outlet pipes 31, (32), (Fig. 2, not shown), the liner being formed of high heat conducting, e.g. copper, members 16, 17 welded together along adjacent edges 18 to form a polygonal mould cavity 12 having no welds at corners. The rectangular mould cavity 12 described is formed by channel section members 16, 17 made from rolled copper sheets to form side walls 14 and end walls 15, which may be closer together at the bottom than at the top to produce a longitudinally tapering mould. The mould surfaces are machine finished and water cooling grooves 20 are machined on their outer faces, the thickness of copper between the mould surface and the ends of the grooves being sufficient to allow re-machining of the mould surface after scratching and erosion in use. Grooves 29 are provided at the top and bottom of plates 21, 22 forming the back-up structure 13 to allow passage of cooling water, seals 33, 35 also being provided. A vertical line of thermocouples (45) may be provided to monitor the temperature along the mould and ascertain the level of molten metal therein. The copper members 16, 17 may be welded together using a copper wire electrode with a mixture of helium and argon to form an inert gas shield. A continuous weld is formed by a succession of weld beads.
