Abstract

1,160,432. Polymer compositions. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 2 May, 1967 [23 May, 1966], No. 22871/66. Headings C3P and C3R. Bacteriostatic or bactericidal polymer compositions comprise a synthetic polymeric material and 3,3<SP>1</SP>,4- trichloro -, 3,3<SP>1</SP>,4,4<SP>1</SP> - tetrachloro - or 3,3<SP>1</SP>,4,4<SP>1</SP>,5 - pentachlorocarbanilide. Specified polymers are polyethylene, polypropylene, polycaprolactam and polyhexamethylene adipamide. The polychlorocarbanilide may be incorporated before or during polymerization or a solution thereof tumbled with lumps or chips of the polymer. The compositions may be fabricated into shaped articles, e.g. fibres. In Examples (1 to 3) acetone solutions of 3,3<SP>1</SP>,4- trichlorocarbanilide and 3,3<SP>1</SP>,4,4<SP>1</SP>-tetrachlorocarbanilide are applied to polyhexamethylene adipamide and polypropylene chips, and (4 and 5) hexamethylene diammonium adipate is condensed in the presence of 3,3<SP>1</SP>,4,4<SP>1</SP>-tetrachlorocarbanilide.
