Abstract
1,160,345. Magnetron oscillators. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. 16 Aug., 1967, No.37765/67. Heading H1D. In a dither-tuned magnetron wherein a tuning plunger 18 is coupled by an actuating mechanism to a yoke member 27 mounted on an eccentric rotating shaft 29, the actuating mechanism is adjustable in length to allow adjustment of the centre frequency of the magnetron. The actuating mechanism shown comprises a rod 24 coupled at one end to the tuning plunger and screw-threaded at its other end to receive a nut 25 coupled by a ball-andsocket joint 26 to the yoke member 27. The nut 25 is coupled to the tuning adjustment gear 31 by a spider 32 and by flat surfaces 38 on the nut co-operating with flat surfaces 39 on the gear. The rod 24 is tensioned by a spring 52 to prevent backlash and slack in the mechanism, and a bellows 51 seals the envelope of the magnetron whilst allowing movement of the tuning mechanism. The magnetron comprises a cathode 9 surrounded by an anode wall 15 carrying vanes 11 and coupled by slots 17 to a coaxial cavity resonator 16 turned by the plunger 18. The envelope includes polepieces 13 and 14 joined by an external magnet assembly (not shown).
