Abstract

[Also in Division G4] Apparatus for measuring the peripheral speed or the diameter of a rotary workpiece 1 comprises a rotatable member 3 which is arranged to engage the workpiece 1 and to drive one of a co-operating pair of members, the other member being controlled such that relative movement of the members occurs only for a predetermined time or for a pre-selected angle of rotation of the workpiece 1, the relative movement being indicative of the peripheral speed or the diameter of the workpiece. As shown, a pointer 6 Fig. 1 provided with a vernier scale 5 is arranged normally to be rotated in synchronism with a disc 4 by the member 3. The pointer 6 is controlled by an electrical circuit having contacts 9 which are arranged to be closed either for a predetermined time or by a cam 10 mounted to rotate with the workpiece 1. The circuit is such as to hold the pointer stationary during a period defined by two successive actuations of the contacts 9 so that the consquential movement of the disc 4 relative to the pointer 6 is indicative of the peripheral speed or diameter of the workpiece 1. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3, a disc 15 having apertures 16 in its periphery is arranged between a light source and a photoelectric device 17 in such a way that rotation of the disc 15 causes the device 17 to supply pulses to a counter 18, the number of pulses counted during a predetermined rotation of the workpiece 12 or during a predetermined time interval being indicative of the diameter or peripheral speed of the workpiece.
