Abstract

1,159,824. Haemostatic substance from peanuts. SPOFA SPOJENE PODNIKY PRO ZDRAVOTNICKOU VYROBU. 5 Aug., 1966 [18 Aug., 1965], No. 35103/66. Addition to 992753. Heading A5B. A material having haemostatic properties is prepared by extracting the skinny testa of peanut fruit, (Arachis hypogaea L) with water and/or a non-toxic water miscible organic solvent, according to Specification 992,753, purifying the extract from colouring substances and condensed tannins, and evaporating the purified extract to dryness. Preferred organic solvents are C 1 to C 3 alkanols, most preferably ethanol. Purification may be effected either by cooling the extract to a temperature between its freezing point and 10‹C, whereby the contaminants are precipitated, or by extraction of these substances from the extract with a water imiscible C 4 toC 6 alkanol, preferably butanol. The evaporation is best performed at reduced pressure, or by spray drying. The product may be incorporated in pharmaceutical compositions for internal or perlingual administration or for topical and local application. Suitable forms are candies and chewing gum, preferably acidified e.g. with citric acid, to promote absorption of the active agent; linguettes for buccal absorption, which may also contain ascorbic acid, vaginal pessaries; rectal suppositories; and aqueous microclysters. Besides haemostatic properties, the inventive product is said to be a protease inhibitor, with particular activerty against plasmin and callicrein and to have smooth muscle constricting (vasotonic and uterotonic) properties and anti-inflammatory effects.
