Abstract

1,159,818. Lamps. NATIONAL VIDEO CORP. 28 Nov., 1966 [10 Dec., 1965], No. 53166/66. Heading F4R. [Also in Divisions G2 and H1] Light source apparatus for use in lighthouse structures for forming phosphor dot patterns in shadow mask colour TV tubes comprises a source of light 40 (e.g. a mercury arc lamp at prime focus 41) within a housing including reflector 31, preferably elliptically shaped, and a lens positioned in opening 50, the configuration of the lens being such as to cause the light directed toward the edges of the tube face to be of substantially greater intensity than the light directed toward the centre of the tube face. Preferably the configuration and refractive index of the lens is such as to produce a cardiod radiation pattern (Fig. 6a, not shown). In embodiments, the maximum amount of light is deflected by no more then 45 degrees, e.g. 35 to 45 degrees from axis 42, the angle of the entry surface (155, Fig. 4, not shown), of a quartz lens is 18 degrees 30 minutes to the longitudinal axis for 3650Š radiation, and the exit surface, chosen to intersect the narrowest portion of the emergent beam, may be at 30 to 45 degrees to axis 42. The entry surface may be extended (to point 58, Fig. 4, not shown) to form a cone-shaped configuration yielding less light parallel to axis 42 compared with the truncated cone configuration; intermediate variations allow control of the light distribution.
