Abstract
1,159,479. Non-catalytic vapour phase oxidation of hydrocarbons and reactor therefor. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 16 Aug., 1966 [16 Aug., 1965], No. 36566/66. Heading C2C. A process for the oxidation of one or more aliphatic hydrocarbons containing 2 to 4 carbon atoms comprise: (a) introducing less than the total quantity of at least one of the hydrocarbons into a reaction zone 5 at the inlet thereof; (b) introducing the remainder of the hydrocarbon together with oxygen into the reaction zone through a plurality of inlets 17 disposed along the reaction zone; (c) spacing the hydrocarbon inlets along the reaction zone so that less than half the number of the inlets are distributed between the inlet and the first half of the reaction zone: (d) effecting the oxidation of the hydrocarbon at substantially isothermal reaction temperature of from about 425‹ C. to about 575‹ C. and a pressure ranging from about one atmosphere to about 250 p.s.i.g., and (e) removing the effluent from the reaction zone and recovering the olefin oxide from the reaction products. The process and apparatus are described with reference to the oxidation of a mixture of propane and propylene to produce propylene oxide, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, acrolein and acetone.
