Abstract

1,159,470. Monochloropivalic acid. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 20 Sept., 1967 [22 Sept., 1966], No. 42863/67. Heading C2C. A process for the preparation of monochloropivalic acid comprises contacting gaseous chlorine with liquid pivalic acid, the temperature of the pivalicacid-containing mixture being not more than 80‹ C. below the lowest temperature at which the pivalic-acid-containing mixture boils, taking care that the said mixture does not boil, withdrawing from the reaction zone a mixture still containing at least 0À25 mole of unconverted pivalic acid per mole of monochloropivalic acid formed, and subjecting this mixture to rectification in which the monochloropivalic acid obtained as bottom product is discharged continuously or intermittently while the pivalic acid, if desired, is recycled to the chlorination zone.
