Abstract

1,158,909. Logic circuits using magnetic elements. SIEMENS A.G. 5 Sept., 1966 [6 Sept., 1965], No. 39555/66. Heading H3B. A logic circuit component includes a plurality of magnetic thin film elements having uniaxial magnetic anisotropy, each film having supply leads electrically connected to the film and a control input for providing an external magnetic control field to the film, the arrangement being such that a voltage is developed in the film in a direction transverse to the supply leads due to the transverse Hall effect in the presence of the control field. The logical function performed depends on the angular relationships between the control field, the easy axis of the film and the supply leads of the plurality of films. In the drawings M is the easy axis of film 4, line 3 is the supply lead, lines 1 and 2 are the control lines and 5 is the output lead. An output is produced only when the resultant magnetization in the film lies at an angle, other than 90 degrees, to line 3. Figs. 4 shows a circuit for performing the disjunction (OR) function. An input on either line 1, 2 rotates the magnetization vector through 45 degrees and an output is produced. If the remanent magnetization vectors in the two films of Fig. 4 are opposed the device performs the antivalence (EXCLUSIVE-OR) function. The function performed by the device of Fig. 6 is equivalence (parity), an output being produced only if the inputs to both lines 1, 2 are the same. Fig. 7 (not shown) includes two films arranged in the same way as film II in Fig. 6. An output is produced unless inputs are supplied to both lines 1, 2 (Sheffer function). In Fig. 8 an additional film is provided, without a control line, which converts the preceding embodiment into a conjunction (AND) circuit. The circuit of Fig. 4 may be similarly modified by provision of an additional uncontrolled film, in this case having its easy axis parallel to that of film II in Fig. 6. This circuit gives an output only in the absence of any input (Pierce function).
