Abstract
1,158,755. Luminescent materials and uses thereof. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 22 March, 1967 [25 March, 1966], No. 13388/67. Heading C4S. A red luminescing material comprises a compound having the formula AB (1-x) Eu x O 2 where A is an alkali metal, preferably Na and/or Li and B is one or more of the trivalent metals Y, Gd, Lu, La, Sc, In preferably Y, Gd and/or Lu and wherein 0À4>x>0À0001 preferably 0À2>x>0À005, e.g. x =0À01, 0.05 or 0À1. A number of specific compositions are disclosed. Excitation by electrons, short wave ultra-violet radiation (2537Š for example), or X-rays produces an emission maximum between 610 nm. and 615 nm. and the white body colour material may be used in colour television tubes, X-ray tubes, and mercury vapour discharge lamps for instance. In the preparation the starting materials, anhydrous Na 2 CO 3 , Gd 2 O 3 and Eu 2 O 3 for example are mixed and heated in a dry atmosphere at 900‹ to 1200‹ C., for example, for 4 hours at 910‹ C. in a dry oxygen current, the reaction mixture is cooled, ground and dried and reheated for 4 hours at approximately 1100‹ C. in a dry oxygen current. The product may be graded by a sieve with apertures of less than 200 microns.
