[Also in Division B4] An instrument for suturing, by the simultaneous insertion of a plurality of staples positioned across the line of the suture, comprises a magazine (accommodating U-shaped staples) made as a frame with a through aperture and a plurality of pairs of slots provided in the opposed inner sides of walls of the frame, serving to receive the staple ends, and a pusher fashioned as a one-piece plate with a continuous flat working end and capable of passing through the aperture of the magazine to effect a simultaneous ejection of all the staples therefrom. As illustrated in Fig. 2, magazine 4 comprises a rectangular frame formed by two plates 7 secured to two inserts 8 and 9 by rivets 10, the plates being provided with slots 6 to accommodate wire staples 11 which are ejectable by pusher 5 connected to actuating rod 12. The slots are so positioned that the staples contained therein lie in planes which either are normal to or, as illustrated in Fig. 3, are oblique to the longitudinal axis of the magazine. Fig. 1 illustrates a stapling instrument in which the magazine and pusher form a stapling body 3 which is housed in a body 1 provided with a die 2 to bend staples on ejection thereof. In order to use the instrument, the magazine is moved relative to the die by rotation of nut 13 to space apart the magazine and die an appropriate distance, i.e. equivalent to the thickness of the tissues being sutured, and movable handle 14, after being released from safety lock 15, is moved manually about pivot pin 18 towards fixed handle 16, which is secured by rivets 17 to the instrument body, to effect movement of the actuating rod and hence of the pusher which effects simultaneous ejection of all staples in the magazine; after use, the movable handle returns to its original position under the actuation of spring 19 and co-acting stop 20.
