Abstract
115,812. Kettering, C. F. Aug. 30, 1915, [Convention date]. Make-and-break switches, mechanical; actuating.-An ignition system for high-speed multicylinder engines comprises a number of make- and-break devices (46, 48, in a primary circuit) which are opened successively by an engine driven timing-cam 51, in synchronism with distributor mechanism A, B, operating successively in the secondary circuits. Either the stationary or the moving contacts of the distributors are staggered with regard to each other so as to ensure their successive actuation. An engine-driven shaft 73 is connected to a spindle 75 by a pin which is carried by a manually adjustable collar 77 and traverses straight and oblique slots in the parts 73, 75. The spindle 75 drives an upper shaft 80 through a similar connexion controlled by a centrifugal governor 86, this upper shaft carrying the timing-can 51. A transverse shaft 94, to which the rotary arms of the distributors are secured, is driven from the spindle 75. The distributor contacts are of such dimensions that the automatic mechanism for regulating the timing may operate without angular adjustment, of the distributing mechanism.
