Abstract
1,158,023. Antibacterial polypeptides; medicines. ISRAEL, AGRICULTURE, MINISTRY OF, E. LAHAV, A. KATCHALSKY and M. T. SODE-MOGENSEN. 13 Jan., 1967 [16 Jan., 1966], No. 2021/67. Heading A5B. Antibacterial polypetides designated whole caseicidin, α-caseicidin, #-cateicidin or ycaiseiciden are prepared by forming a homogeneous suspension of the appropriate casein in water, adjusting the pH of the suspension to pH 6-7 by the addition of a base in order to dissolve the casein, adding a proteolytic enzyme, incubating at 30C, inactivating the enzyme by heating, cooling, adding an acid to precipitate paracaseinates, centrifuging and isolating the caseicidins from the supernatant. The enzymes may be rennin, papain, pepsin or trypsin. The caseicidins are obtained from the corresponding whole casein, α-casein, #- casein or y-casein. A pharmaceutical composition comprises one or more of the above caseicidins and a carrier. Optional ingredients are antibiotics, e.g. penicillin.
