Abstract
1,157,692. Ingot moulds; moulding processes. AMSTED INDUSTRIES Inc. 21 July, 1966 [30 July, 1965], No. 32761/66. Heading B3F. A mould is formed from side blocks 14, 16 and, adjustably positioned or size-selected (to determine the height, length and width of the cavity) a top-block 18, a bottom-block (20) and a rearblock (22); it has a riser box 26 with a separable upper section 42 outside the blocks and a lower section 44 in a riser portion 37 of a passage formed at the front end of the mould by graphite blocks 28, 30, 32. The lower portion of the passage is an ingate 36 from a bottom pouring gate (40). The lower section 44 of the riser is formed by packing and curing sand 48 around a steel liner 46 (either separately, in a core box, or in situ with the aid of a plate (65) around the bottom of the liner) and so given an end flange 56 to rest on the blocks 28, 30, 32 and to receive telescopically the upper section 42 with its steel liner 60 and outer casing 58. A block 64 secured to the top block 18 provides back support for the upper riser section 42 which may be reusable after casting. Movable framework sections 66 which carry the side blocks 14, 16 also support elements 68 abutting the blocks 28, 30 and securing them by clamps 70. The block 32 is mountod on a channel 76 by clamps 78.
