Abstract

1,157,418. Telomers of 2-chloro-1,3-butadiene. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 20 May, 1968 [20 July, 1967], No. 23806/68. Heading C3P. Telomers are prepared by polymerizing 2- chloro-1,3-butadiene with a mixed catalyst comprising an iron carbonyl and an organo aluminium compound of formula AlR 2 X wherein R represents a linear or branched alkyl radical with from 1 to 10 carbon atoms and X is hydrogen or a halogen atom or alkyl or alkoxy radical in the presence of a telogen and optionally of a solvent or diluent at a temperature of 0-150‹ C. The telogen may be an aromatic hydrocarbon. A co-catalyst, such as a halohydrocarbon, may also be present. In the examples, (1) a benzene solution containing 10 p.p.m. of water and 2- chloro-1,3-butadiene (stabilized with phenthiazine) was treated with iron pentacarbonyl and tri-isobutyl aluminium, the resultant telomer being treated with ethanol and hydrochloric acid, followed by fractionation; (2) the monomer, benzene and iron pentacarbonyl were heated, followed by treatment with triethyl aluminium and t. -butyl chloride; the telomer was worked up as in (1); (3) the monomer, iron pentacarbonyl and toluene in n-hexane in the absence of air and moisture were heated followed by treatment with tri-isobutyl aluminium; the telomer was worked up as in (1).
