Abstract
1,157,231. Hydraulic bolt tensioning. SKYHI Ltd. 28 Feb., 1968 [28 Feb., 1967], No. 9370/67. Heading F2H. [Also in Division F1] A method of controlling the operation of a tool for anchoring bolts under a predetermined tensile load comprises using the tool to effect a number of hydraulically actuated operations at different pressures for carrying out the anchoring sequence, wherein pneumatic pressure is used at different pressure levels to produce the different hydraulic pressures. The bolt 38 is passed through two plates 34, 36 and the collar 42 slipped on to the grooved shank of the bolt. A ram 11 is held at the lefthand end of its cylinder by oil at about 200 p.s.i. while the pintail 44 of the bolt 38 is forced into the open jaws of the tool 10. A push button 13 is then depressed, the valve 20 is changed over to supply oil to the left-hand side of the ram 11 and the control air is supplied from pipe 23, through air pilot valve 22 to change over valve 24 to increase the air pressure supply to the motor and hence the hydraulic pressure to move the ram to the right and so tension the bolt. When the bolt is stretched beyond a certain point, the pintail 44 snaps off at neck 40 leaving the collar 42 swaged on the remaining part 38 of the bolt. When the button 13 is released, the valve 20 is again changed over to move the ram to the left and the air pressure is released through valve 22. Oil pressure again builds up until the tool 10 ejects the broken-off pintail 44 at about 2000 p.s.i. At this pressure the valve 28 operates which through valve 26 changes over valve 24 and by changing over valve 24 pressure is applied to the motor at 5 p.s.i. and the oil bleed valve 31 is operated. The motor stalls at this pressure and the sequence can then be commenced on another bolt. The fluid is supplied to either side of the ram by means of an hydraulic pump 14 and a pneumatic motor 16.
