Abstract

1,156,877. Glow discharge lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 17 Nov., 1967 [22 Nov., 1966], No. 52469/67. Heading H1D. A glow discharge indicator tube for reproducing signs in the form of luminous segments, and employing positive column glow whereby the effects of cathode sputtering may be avoided, includes a glow discharge cathode 7 and an anode 6, and a plurality of electrically conductive sign segments 2, a glow discharge path existing between each segment and the anode, each of which paths is both screened from the cathode-anode discharge path and is narrowed by insulating material 4 over at least a part of its length to one or more ducts 5 which end on the corresponding segments, the segments being selectively held positive with respect to the anode in operation. The segments 2 and lead-in conductors 3 are formed by gold deposited on the glass faceplate 1 of the tube, the ducts 5 being formed by apertures in a mica plate 4 which bears against the faceplate and is rendered opaque by a coating of chromium oxide. The cathode 7 is coated with a barium oxide based emissive material; the anode 6 is of iron coated with aluminium; and the filling is of neon containing 0À1% argon, at 250 torr.
