A printing calculator or accounting machine is adapted for calculations in ú s. d. or ú and new pence, by modifying the lowest four orders of a conventional machine, such as described in patent Specification 709,181, for calculations in tens of shillings, shillings and pence or tens of new pence, new pence and new halfpence according to the setting of a control lever 21. When the control lever 21 is set in its " decimal " position, blocking member 53 is moved to lock racks 31 and 37 in position. Latch bar 145 is moved longitudinally to engage apertures in pence keys 1-5 and 7-11 and prevent actuation thereof. To enter the amount one new halfpence, the sixpence key is depressed to move rack 33 and rotate the 12-pitch accumulator wheel 25 through six steps. Rack 33 drives a dummy type bar 43 through gears 71, 99, 101 and 77. Type bar 49 carrying types ¢, 0, 1 . . . 11 remains in its home position, with type ¢, at the printing position, due to the locking of rack 31. Dummy type bar 43 operates a hammer engaging type bar 49 through a dummy hammer and co-operating abutments. Tens of new pence are entered in accumulator wheel 28 through rack 37<SP>1</SP>. The latter moves type bar 51 through gears 83, 81 and flexible coupling 85, 87 and 89. When control lever 21 is set in its " sterling " position, blocking member 53 is moved to lock rack 37<SP>1</SP> in position and free racks 33, 37 and latch bar 145 moved to unlock the pence keys. Rack 31 is now free to follow rack 33, through the action of spring 69 and cooperating abutments 45, 47. Type bar 49 is raised by rack 31 through gear train 73, 107, 105 and 75. The rack 37 enters tens of shillings in accumulator wheel 29 and drives type bar 51 through gears 79, 81 and flexible coupling 85<SP>1</SP>, 87<SP>1</SP> and 89. A stop 111 on rack 37 limits movement of the rack whereby the type bar 51 may only be raised to place the type " 1 " in the printing position. Punctuation and spacing-off digits.-Hammers co-operating with type bars printing amounts other than pounds and a punctuation mark or decimal point between the pounds and shillings or new pence columns, are interconnected by pivoted latches when the machine is operating in the decimal mode. Actuation of one of said hammers operates any hammers to the left to print a decimal point and any intervening zeroes in each case. The latches are pivoted clear of the hammers when the machine is operating in the sterling mode. Transfer mechanism -The transfer mechanisms associated with the tens of shillings accumulator wheel 28 and tens of new pence accumulator wheel 29 are secured together to rock the units of pounds accumulator wheel whenever the wheel 28 or 29 passes from the " 9 " to " 0 " position. A pawl 39 rocked by the long tooth of the units of shillings or new pence accumulator wheel 27 actuates transfer mechanisms 41, 41<SP>1</SP> for accumulator wheels 28, 29. A blocking member 119 movable longitudinally by control lever 21 blocks the action of one or other transfer mechanism 41, 41<SP>1</SP> according to whether the machine is operating in the decimal or sterling mode.
