Abstract

1,156,865. Colour television. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. 29 Jan., 1968 [27 Jan., 19671, No. 4210/67. Heading H4F. To adapt the NTSC type automatic time correction (ATC) circuit in a colour video tape recorder for recorded PAL type signals, the colour burst signals of which vary from lineto-line by Œ45 degrees from a reference phase, the ATC circuit, which under NTSC signal playback operation compares the separated 12 subcarrier burst component of the recorded colour video signal with a locally generated reference wave at subcarrier frequency in a phase detector 14, the resultant error signal being used to control a variable delay line 16, is also arranged to produce a further error signal which is used to synchronize the sense of the periodic phase shift 18 of the reference subcarrier with that of the subcarrier burst component of the recorded PAL signal. If the sense of the periodic phase shift of the reference subcarrier is incorrect, i.e. phase of the reference subcarrier is cyclically out-of-phase with the phase of the recorded subcarrier burst, the error signal includes a square wave of half horizontal line scan frequency which is filtered, amplified and clipped 22-28, and fed to a diode pump type divider or counter detector stage 30 which produces a reset pulse after approximately ten square wave pulses. The reset pulse is coupled to a half line frequency binary 20 which controls the phase shifter 18, binary 20 being triggered by a locally generated horizontal sync. signal. Detector 30 prevents accidental resetting of binary 20 by spurious signals of large amplitude, and is such that its counting number increases as the amplitude of the counter input signal decreases, i.e. the further the frequency of any spurious signal is away from half horizontal scan frequency and due to the selectivity of filter 22, the lower is the amplitude of the resultant signal and the higher the count number before the counter is fired and binary 20 is reset.
