Abstract

1,156,816. Papermaking. FLEMING & SONS Inc. 6 Sept., 1966 [13 Sept., 1965, 7 Feb., 1966], No. 39788/66. Headings D2A and D2B. Porous paper for gypsum wallboard has a bonding surface and an exposed surface, and is made by forming a slurry of papermaking fibre, adding to the slurry a sizing agent that remains water-resistant up to at least 140‹F, treating the slurry to retain the sizing agent at least until the slurry is nearly dried into paper, feeding the slurry to a Fourdrinier process, drying the paper, finishing the bonding surface at the calender stacks with water, and finishing the exposed surface at the calender stacks with an aqueous wax emulsion or a combination of starch and aqueous wax emulsion. As shown, the slurry 11 from the headbox 10 passes to the Fourdrinier screen 12, processing rolls 13 and wet stack 14, where the bonding surface is finished with water from a trough 15 and the exposed surface with wax emulsion or wax and starch mixture from a trough 16. The paper is then taeated on the dry stack 17 and is rolled up at 18. It may have surface ornamentation applied by coatang or printing at 19 or 20 or at a later stage. In one process, the pH of the slurry is adjusted to 7-9, the sizing agent is an alkyl ketene dimer derived from palmitic, stearic, myristic or oleic acid, and is retained by the addition, as retention agent, of a watersoluble cationic thermosetting resin made by reacting a polyalkylene polyamine with diglycolic acid or a C 3 to C 8 saturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acid, and this product with epichlorohydrin. In another process, the pH of the slurry is adjusted to 3.5 to 5, the sizing agent is rosin-alum, and the bonding surface is finished with water made alkaline (pH of' 11 or more) with soda ash to remove sizing agent from that surface. This finishing water may contain a rewetting agent, e.g. a block copolymer containing oxypropylene and oxyethylene groups. Cream face paper may be made by adding a thin layer of light-coloured slurry from a second headbox.
