Abstract
1,156,729. Power steering systems. INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER CO. 3 Aug., 1966 [6 Aug., 1965], No. 34729/66. Heading B7H. [Also in Divisions B8 and F2] A priority flow divider valve has a spool 30 slidable in a bore 28 to control flow of fluid pressure from two inlet passages 34, 36 to a priority outlet 37 connected to a steering valve 18 and two secondary outlet passages 40, 42 connected to an auxiliary circuit 24. The spool has an internal bore housing a spring 56 which biases the spool towards the end stop 50 and has at least one radial opening 62 in flats 76 formed on the end of a central land 68 to communicate fluid pressure in inlet passage 34 to the left-hand end chamber of the bore 28 at all positions of the spool. The inlet passage 34 has a restriction 44 and the inlet passage 36 communicate with the right-hand end chamber 54 of the bore 28 by means of passage 60. The spool is formed with three lands 66, 68, 70 spaced by grooves 72, 74 and is arranged in its right-hand rest position to connect inlet passage 34 with priority outlet 37 via the restriction between spool land 68 and land 92 and to connect inlet passage 36 via groove 74 to secondary outlet passage 42. Demand by the steering valve moves the spool into an intermediate position in which groove 72 communicates fluid pressure from inlet passage 34 to the priority outlet 37 due to the pressure drop in the outlet 37 being communicated to the left-hand end chamber of bore 28. The two secondary outlets 40, 42 are obstructed by lands 68, 70 and the priority outlet pressure is regulated by relief valve 46 connected to reservoir 12. When the supply pump exceeds the demands of the steering the pressure rise in chamber 54 moves the spool to the position shown to maintain restricted communication of the inlet passage 34 with the priority outlet 37 to supply its demands and in addition to connect inlet passage 36 with the secondary outlet passage 40 to allow the auxiliary circuit, e.g. a power lift circuit to be operated. When the steering valve 18 is closed the spool 30 moves back to its righthand rest position communicating pressure fluid from the inlet passage 36 to the auxiliary circuit by way of the secondary outlet passage 42.
