Abstract
1,156,668. Coating surfaces. DOW CORNING CORP. 15 June, 1966 [15 July, 1965], No. 26772/66. Headings B2E and B2K.. [Also in Division C3] The adhesion of silicones, polyacrylics, polyurethanes and polysulphides to various substrates may be improved by adding to the above curable polymers, or priming the surface of the substrate with, a silane of the formula:- wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> are hydrocarbon radicals free from terminal aliphatic unsaturation, A is a radical attached to the silicon atom via a silicon-carbon bond and contains at least two hydroxyl or mereapto groups, x is 1 or 2, a is 0, 1 or 2 and the sum of x and a is 1, 2 or 3, applying the polymer or polymer composition to the substrate and finally curing the polymer. Suitable substrates are brick, concrete, glass, ceramic, porcelain, aluminium, tin, iron, magnesium, copper, steel, wood, cotton, paper, polystyrene, polyacrylates, alkyd resins, formaldehyde resins and cellulose acetate. Examples describe the bond of (1-5) at room temperature curing polyurethane to aluminium using a silane of the formula:- as an internal and' external primer and (6 and 7) at room temperature curing silicone rubber to pine, oak, aluminium, polystyrene and a ceramic tile using the above silane as an internal primer. When used as an external primer the silane may be dissolved in a suitable solvent before applying to the surface of the substrate.
