1,156,632. Electromagnets. AMBAC INDUSTRIES, Inc. 7 Oct., 1966 [12 Nov., 1965; 8 Aug., 1966], No. 44872/66. Heading H1P. In an electromagnetic actuator suitable for use in controlling the speed of an internal combustion engine, comprising a stator with an energizing winding and a pivoted armature which is attracted towards the stator to an extent determined by the current in the winding the rotational force for a given current is substantially independent of the position of the armature over a considerable range of its movement. In the preferred device (Fig. 4) the laminated U-shaped core of the stator has arcuate portions coaxial with the armature pivot co-operating with similar acruate portions formed on prongs 74, 76 extending from the main part of the armature. In operation, since the magnetic flux travels radially across the constant air gap between these co-operating portions, the torque exerted on the armature is due solely to edge effects and remains substantially constant. The armature is attached to one arm 44 of a hinge which is riveted to a PTFE coated glass fibre strip 48 attached to the stator casing, the arm forming a knife edge bearing on the fixed part of the hinge. Armature movement is controlled by springs 66 and limited by stops 60, 68 and the air gap is made adjustable by making the clearance holes in hinge 50 larger than the securing bolts 56. In a modified arrangement the armature is centrally pivoted and has shaped prongs at both ends co-operating with two separate stator assemblies
