Abstract
1,156,038. Variable capacitors. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 8 Sept., 1966 [11 Sept., 1965], No. 40192/66. Heading H1M. Stator plate 1 for a variable capacitor has an envelope 9 consisting of two insulating thermoplastic, e.g. polyethylene, foils sealed together at the edges, the foils not being bonded to the surfaces of the plate, but being under tensile stresses parallel to the plane of the plate as indicated by the arrows 11. The envelope material forms the capacitor dielectric. The edge portion 6 of the envelope 9 is widened so that in the position of minimum capacitance the rotor plate 5 overlaps it and facilitates insertion of rotor blades between stators in a multi-plate capacitor. A number of stator plates may be enclosed at one time as shown in Fig. 2. The plates 1 are arranged between strips 13 of thermoplastic material held between a pair of press plates under such conditions of temperature and pressure that the thermoplastic material just begins to flow, being displaced in the direction of the arrows 15. The edges are sealed together and the part covering the plates is stretched on cooling.
