1,155,708. Making composite articles; welding by pressure; forming and jointing. H. HEUMANN. 27 June, 1966 [25 June, 1965], No. 28735/66. Headings B3A, B3Q, B3R and B3V] A composite material consists wholly or mainly of metal in which the metal consists solely of metal filaments interconnected by pressure applied by a high energy rate process taking place in a few micro-seconds. The energy may be provided by explosion, electro-magnetic field, hydro-electric means &c. The metal filaments may be provided with coatings and may be cooled before and/or while being bonded. Granular filling material in paste form with ether and camphor or alpha-methyl cellulose may be employed and filaments of Al, Cu and Pb may be used with filaments of Be, Ti, steel and W, e.g. Be with Al for building material and W with Pb for anti-radiation screening. The material may be formed from layers of wires, the direction of the wires of one layer being transverse to that of the adjacent layer or layers of wires in the same direction may be bonded, the wires being of different sizes or the wires being coated, the coating being forced to fill spaces between the wires. Fine fibres 3, Fig. 8c, as an intermediate material may be used in the bonding of wires 1 or alternatively metal filaments may be arranged in a random fashion with an organic or inorganic material between the filaments. Wires of circular or rectangular section all in one direction may be bonded to form a generally circular or rectangular section member and a material comprising outer layers of wires with a core of random filaments and a filler may be formed into rectangular or circular section pipe. To form a pipe from inner layers of wires, possibly of different diameters, and outer layers of wires the layers are arranged in a body 9, Fig. 17, and a centrally positioned explosive charge 8 is detonated. Material produced by the method according to the invention may be formed into bolts, hooks and curved sheets.
