Abstract

1,155,686. Washing machines. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 10 April, 1968, No. 17248/68. Heading D1A. A washing-machine, having an electrically driven agitator or pulsator mounted in a tub, comprises an electro-mechanical device with holding contacts 5 which with other circuits, e.g. that of the motor 9, is energized, when the heater thermostat 3 first cuts off the heater 2, and remains so even if the heater 2 is subsequently switched on and off again. In operation, the wash tub of the twin-tub washing machine is filled and the laundry placed therein, timer 8 and the thermostat are set. Switch 1 is turned to 12 o'clock to complete the circuit through thermostat switch 3 to heater 2 and lamp 14 and the water is heated. When the thermostat operates switch 3 to cut off the heater and extinguish light 14, relay 4 operates to close contacts 5 and at the same time timer 12 starts, wash motor 9 starts and the solenoid is operated which controls the clutch connecting the agitator or pulsator to motor 9. These circuits continue to be energized even if switch 3 reverts to heating position. When washing is complete, arm 7 having left strip 13, motor 12 and the solenoid are de-energized but motor 9 remains energized to operate the emptying pump. The laundry is then placed in the spinner and switch 10 is operated by closing the lid to energize spinner motor 11. The machine may be controlled manually by switching switch 1 to 3 o'clock and thereby cutting out relay 4.
